Sedona: My First Encounter With Bell Rock

Written by Gary Wonning

An excerpt from my book, The Portals of Sedona.

Soon we approached the Hwy 179 exit and began driving towards Sedona.  Suddenly, rounding a mountain, in clear view directly in front of us was a large red rock that looked like a bell.

I remember her saying something about it being Bell Rock, Well, that makes sense since it looks like a bell.

For whatever reason, I began to feel light headed, extremely hungry, and disoriented.

This is crazy, I just ate a big breakfast two hours ago, and I can’t be hungry. I continued looking at Bell Rock and the feelings intensified.

I stopped the car just short of Bell Rock for some photos of this captivating rock. I was extremely hungry and making an effort to stay grounded, I ate everything Emma brought from home, and I was still hungry.

The journey was just beginning.

Red Planet Diner, now called the Et Encounter Diner and formerly called Phil and Eddies is a must see. Located on Highway 89A in West Sedona, the diner is decorated with a UFO theme.

The walls are curiously decorated with space aliens and other paraphernalia from other dimensions; it is a delight to observe while enjoying a delicious burger and listening to locals tell their tales of alien encounters.

Cathedral Rock Sedona Arizona

Cathedral Rock , often seen in western movies of old, is one of the four major vortex’s in the area.

There are several energy centers, or vortexes of subtle energy, located in the Sedona area. (In Sedona, the energy centers are referred to as vortexes rather than vortices.)  The energy from these vortexes saturates the whole area in and around Sedona, and can be noticed in a subtle but general way anywhere around town.  If you actually go to one of the vortex sites, which is where the energy is strongest, it can be a very uplifting experience.  The energy you take in at one of these energy centers can stay with you and affect you positively for days afterwards.

This is a feminine vortex.

The Feminine Side can be viewed as being on a scale that has goodness at the high end, and the opposite, which is badness or evil, at the low end. In contrast to the masculine side, which strengthens the ability to stand up for your own rights, the feminine side strengthens the ability to allow others their rights and not interfere with those rights. The energy at this vortex strengthens the things you normally think of as feminine, such as kindness, compassion, patience, and the ability to let others need you and depend on you. And it strengthens the ability to anticipate the impact of your actions before you act, which is what considerateness is all about.

reality

I have found over the years that there is no such thing as reality, it is only how we perceive it. Each of us may have a different view of it because of our different beliefs and experiences. Two individuals can be sitting side by side, looking at the same event and “see” two entirely different outcomes based on their individual perceptions.

Lying at the base of the Colorado Plateau, Sedona is one of the most beautiful and mystical areas on the planet. Many deem it more beautiful and spectacular than the Grand Canyon.

Discovered by Europeans in the early 1900s, the town was named after the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly. Many view it as an area of great spiritual value, as did the American Indians.

Capitol Butte, or Thunder Mountain is the highest peak in the Sedona area, thus it is visible from nearly any location in town as well as the surrounding area.

Representing the head of a serpent, many native American legends surround it.

Sedona is often referred to as the unofficial New Age capital of the world.
North Arizona University concluded that 64 percent of the near
four million annual visitors to Sedona come in search of a spiritual
experience.

Archaeologist Jesse Walter Fewkes  believed that Sedona
and the Verde Valley was the legendary Palatkwapi, the great red
city of the south, which is spoken about in Hopi legends.

For the Hopi,
the “Red City” was a great cultural and religious
center
which they only traveled to for religious and spiritual practices, no one lived here.

Regardless if you come here for a spiritual experience, to hike the many trails, view the beautiful vistas, or to just relax at one of the luxurious resorts in the area, Sedona will not disappoint you.

The Sedona area is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the world. The red rocks matched with the turquoise blue sky leaves one with a sense of wonderment.

The spiritual significance of the area combined with the vortexes in the area lead the ancients to believe the area was too sacred for human habitation, thus they only came here for spiritual ceremonies.

The ancients believe a vortex is  a place where energy emits from the earth and thus makes contact with other dimensions and life forms  easier to accomplish.

Each specific vortex has a special significance to them and obviously courthouse Butte was deemed a place of judgement. They came here to be  judged by their Gods. Although not one of the four accepted major vortices, with many smaller sites in the area, Courthouse Butte remains a small and important vortex in its own right.

Hiking trails are abundant in the area and provides an opportunity for the hiker to observe the mountain and surrounding area from various locations and vantage points.

Be sure to bring your camera and plenty of storage space, as opportunity abounds to take that perfect postcard photo. It’s neighbor to the west, Bell Rock has been designated a UFO landing site, so, you never know.
