Get Them A Driver’s License: Let them Grow Up

photo of a distinguished older gentleman

Wisdom lost through the ages, common sense is no longer common.

Recently, at a dinner gathering, two of the couples sitting next to  my wife and I  were talking about how their teenage kids always wanted them to drive them to school functions and other events they were going to .

I have heard this scenario before, with parents talking about how their kids had no interest in learning how to drive. Really !

I wonder why?

As long as mom and dad will drive them, why should they learn how to drive and accept any responsibility?

Then the normal response is, “I get tired of arguing with them , they don’t want to do it.”

First off, who is the boss in your family?

Next, they like to go places don’t they?

What is wrong with just making the statement, “I don’t have time to take you everywhere, you are all grown up, if you want to go, you will have to learn how to drive. It’s time you accepted some responsibility and started driving yourself. “

Start thinking of somewhere you need to go when they need to go somewhere, they will get the point.

Unless you want them living in your basement until they are thirty, it’s time to lay down the law and make them grow up. if you want to raise responsible mature people, you can’t be afraid of hurting their feelings or making them feel inferior. Feeling inferior is a decision they make on their own, you are not in charge of their feelings, and you  have no control over their feelings.

You aren’t doing them any favors by patronizing  them and keeping them under your wing. If they don’t learn to fly, they never will, and chances are your grandchildren won’t either.

He has observed that many of the forgotten cultures had spiritual beliefs that were stronger than ours in modern times.

In technology, we have made advances far superior to those that came before us, but, we have lagged behind in gaining or maintaining our spiritual knowledge.

For us to advance as the human race, we need to combine the spiritual knowledge of those that came before us, not only that of the ancients but the knowledge of our direct ancestors as well, with the technical knowledge we have today for us to propel into the twenty-first century and beyond.

The Life of a UPS Driver: A Snowy Day

Art Prints

Written by Gary Wonning

The day began like many others, a chill in the air and a chance of snow. Soon after arriving in Vevay, the snow really began to come down and before I knew it, there was nearly a foot of the white stuff on the ground.

Knowing the roads would be a lot worse  in the high country, I soon became concerned I may not be able to get home. Occasionally, drivers had not been able to get back until after midnight on such days. On one such day, Don drove back to Osgood after midnight with no windshield. He  slid off the road and a tree limb struck the windshield, breaking it.

As I left Vevay and drove through Markland, it was getting worse by the minute. This road isn’t traveled much on a good day and there hadn’t been anyone through here for a while. Over a foot of snow covered the road and I had no idea where the edge of the road was. A tractor trailer was coming right at me and he didn’t know where the road was either. As he approached me, the right side of his trailer dropped off the road and it began to jack knife.

This isn’t going to be pretty. Determining how and where I was going to get out of his way, he suddenly got his truck straightened out, just in time. We missed by inches.

It became obvious I wasn’t going to be able to finish my day; the trick now was to just get home. I’m not sure how that is going to happen, eventually, I need to go up a hill but that will be difficult, I can hardly maintain any speed on flat ground.

The adventures and misadventures of a UPS driver.

Snow in Michigan

Snow in Northern Michigan

I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in northern
Michigan. He said that the snow is nearly waist high and is still
falling.

The temperature is at fifteen degrees and still dropping… and the wind is increasing to near gale force.

Even the plows are having a hard time getting around.

The schools are closed, and alerts are on all the TV and radio stations urging people to stay off the streets.

He said his wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window for hours on end, just staring.

He says he’s concerned that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

Long Range Weather Prediction

Long-Range Weather Prediction

Summer was coming to a close. The Indians on the remote
reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be severe
or mild.

Since he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been
taught old secrets; when he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell how the
weather was going to be.

Nevertheless, to be safe, he told his tribe that the winter was
indeed going to be bad and that everybody should collect wood and be
prepared.

Being a practical leader, he had an idea after a few days. He went to

the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked “Is the
coming winter going to be bad?” “It looks like this winter is going to
be terrible,” the meteorologist at the weather service responded.

So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even

more wood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National
Weather Service again. “Is it going to be a cold winter?” “Yes,” the man
at National Weather Service again replied, “It definitely will be very
severe.”

The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect

every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later, he called the
National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter
is going to be very cold?”

“Absolutely,” the man replied. “It’s going to be one of the coldest winters ever.”

“How can you be so sure?” the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, “Because the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!”
