Palmetto Florida

One of the early settlements of southwest Florida, Palmetto has grown from humble beginnings to the thriving community it is today.
Palmetto Florida

The first shipping dock in this part of Florida was built at the foot of 9th Avenue by Joel Hendrix several years after arriving here in 1871. Soon after that the narrow guage Palmetto Terminal Rail Road was built in 1893.

Both were constructed to provide a way for farmers to transport their products to markets, thereby making citrus and other products available to the American public. In the early days the train was rather unreliable , the locomotive broke down quite often , making it necessary to hitch four horses to the flat bed car and pulling it to the docks in the time worn tradition of using horse power when all else failed.
The town was incorporated in 1897 , and soon after in 1899 the first bank in Manatee County, was opened in this fair city.
Boardwalk and Pier located in down town Palmetto Florida.

Today much has changed, no longer an important shipping port as most produce today now travels by truck, the town has become a tourist mecca, with dining, fishing, shopping and other attractions available. Orlando and Disney world is less than two hours away, the Kennedy Space center less than three and many professional baseball teams now hold spring training in
the area offering more added attractions to be enjoyed. Be sure to bring your camera!
Whether spending a day or a week , there is much available to make your stay an enjoyable and pleasant experience.

America’s Number One Beach

Written by : Gary Wonning
Located on the west central coast of Florida lies a pristine beach that has just recently been named America’s number one beach.

Photography Prints

Famous for its white quartz crystal sand this jewel is located in Sarasota Florida, just 65 miles south of Tampa International Airport. Due to the white quartz characteristic’s of the sand, it is never hot and can be walked on with bare feet, even during summer on the hottest days.

Your favorite FLORIDA store

A family beach, the atmosphere is conducive to families or couples who want to enjoy a day away from the hustle and bustle of modern day life. A nearby shaded picnic area and covered refreshment area adds to this friendly environment.

The beach is nearly four miles long from north to south making an enjoyable beach walk a necessity while enjoying the gentle rolling waves and the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  The shallow waters makes for an enjoyable experience for young children are able to wade and splash without being exposed to high waves and riptides. The water often reaches 90 degrees in the summer so there will be no chattering teeth or blue  shivering toddlers.

There is reportedly  a vortex nearby at Point of Rocks for those bent on these activities and an interesting drumming circle is held every Sunday evening until well after the sun sets over the semitropical paradise, after which time dinner can be enjoyed at one of the local restaurants.

Whatever your interests, you will find something to entertain you on Siesta Key.

Sahib Shrine Sarasota Florida

The Sahib Shrine Temple in Sarasota Florida is one of the most active Shrine Temples in all Shrinedom.

Sahib Shrine

The Sahib Shrine had humble beginnings beginning in the 1970s. It began as a Shrine Club with over 800 members. Due to many “snowbirds” desiring to relocate south after retiring from their life long vocations in the north, the club grew rapidly. As it di it becfame increasingly difficult ot find a facility large enough to accomodate their dinners, dances and other functions.

As a result, $13,000 was contributed to buy a piece of property to someday build a facility to accommodate the membership. The building was constructed in 1975 , with full temple status gained in 1982. Since then the Sarasota Shriners , who at one time had a membership of nearly 5,000, have contributed much to the Sarasota community and to the Shriners main philantrophic function, The Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled and Burned Children, where children receive free medical care regardless of race, creed, or national origin.

Today, the temple and it’s members continue on as it has since it’s inception, providing enjoyment and fellowship to it’s members and ladies while at the same time helping providing free medical care for thousands of children.

Solitude: Sarasota Florida

Written by :Gary Wonning

Enjoying peaceful Sarasota Bay Florida, what better place to decide where to travel next on Florida’s suncoast?

Sarasota Florida

This quiet spot located near a busy restaurant on City Island Park in Sarasota Florida it is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine.

Sitting here , one is oblivious to all the activity going on around you. Located on a popular hiking path  where people come to just walk their dogs, lay out on the grass or just sit and contemplate  life, this park bench seldom wants for visitors.

A popular Tiki Bar is nearby to satisfy ones hunger and thirst should the need arise. Adjacent to a popular local tourist attraction  where charter fishing tours, afternoon and evening dinner cruises can be arranged as well as fine and relaxed dining , it would be hard to find a more ideal location to spend the afternoon enjoying the best life has to offer.

I’m sure while sitting on this bench, many people have decided to make Sarasota their permanent home.

This tiny little village is located on the southern coast of Charlotte Harbor, and has much to offer the visitor, be it he is staying for a few hours or several days. One of the many attractions, Fisherman’s Village a shopping and dining mecca offers fine waterfront dining and shops where one can spend the day.

Devastated by hurricane Charley in 2004, the town and surrounding area was nearly destroyed. Much property damaged ensured and it took several years to rebuild the area, now it is back to normal with most of the city retaining its original charm. Much of it looks just like it did before, only with a new coat of paint.

Ponce De Leon Park where this photo was taken  was built in honor of Ponce De Leon who visited here in the early 1500s while he was searching for the fountain of youth. In fact, Mineral Springs, located near here was where the local indians believed the fountain of youth  to be. As a result it has become a popular attraction, don’t know if it contributes to eternal life, but it sure feels good.

If you’re passing through, don’t pass it by.

John Stretch Park Lake Okeechobee Florida

John Stretch Park located near the small town of South Bay in southern Florida is an interesting place to take a little break from the long drive up highway 27 from Fort Lauderdale or Miami on your way to parts unknown .

Situated on Lake Okeechobee , it is a small park featuring some of the old pumps and equipment that had been used in the past to control the flooding in this part of the state .

Shown here is an old Nordberg 1655 Horse Power diesel engine that served for many years. This 11 cylinder engine only consumed 65 gallons of fuel per hour, and thus was capable of pumping 1,861,392,900 gallons of water in the same time period.

With the introduction of newer more efficient engines it was retired in 1989.
Bring your picnic basket as there are plenty of tables available to enjoy a small lunch before resuming your journey.
