Built in Finland it weighs in at 154,407 gross tonnage , it measures 1,112 feet long and 126 feet wide. With 18 decks it measures 209 feet high.

It consumes 28,000 pounds of fuel per hour. According to my calculations, that’s 3,500 gallons.

The ship has an interior promenade 445 feet (136 m) long called the “Royal Promenade”, which features a coffee shop, Sorrento’s Pizzeria, the Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream shop, Vintages wine and tapas bar, the Bull and Bear Irish Pub, and many duty free shops. The Royal Promenade, first seen on Royal Caribbean’s Voyager-Class in 1999, extends through the upper decks of the ships. This gives most upper level cabins a window, either to the port or starboard side or inwards to the promenade.

The ship has three swimming areas: an interactive water park, a dedicated adult pool, and the main pool. The 13th deck has a sports area with a rock climbing wall wall, the Flow rider surf simulator, a miniature golf course and a full size basketball court.

Other items include an ice skating rink rink, a casino, a Johnny Rockets restaurant, and a three-deck-high broadway-style theater. Technology amenities include  wifi capabilities throughout the ship, interactive televisions in all staterooms, and cell phone connectivity. Many of the ship’s interiors were extensively decorated by muralist Clarissa Parish.

We had the opportunity to spend a complimentary two day travel agent get acquainted cruise . Turns out that wasn’t nearly enough time to fully enjoy every amenity the ship has to offer.

Blue Water Bridge Port Huron Michigan

Michigan, surrounded on three sides by water and on the south by a huge cornfield, is famous for it’s bridges.

One of the most beautiful is the Blue Water Bridge spans the St. Clair River which connects Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron. The bridge carries international traffic between Port Huron, Michigan, and Point Edward and Sarnia, Ontario. Located in Port Huron, near the I-94 and I-69 interchange, the bridge forms a critical gateway linking Canada and the United States.

DSC_0096

In 1935, the Michigan Legislature passed a law  creating a State Bridge  Commission to finance the design and erection of the  main bridge structure  of the Blue Water Bridge.  The commission was  approved by the United  States Congress in August of 1935.  The law permitted the commission to  sell bonds that would be repaid  by the revenue from the tolls collected  within  30 years.  This legislation  assumed that Michigan and Ontario would  each build their own approaches  to the bridge,  and customs, immigration  and toll facilities.

The design of the structure by the consultant firms began in August 1936.  The ground breaking ceremony was held on June 23, 1937 in the City of Port Huron and the Blue Water Bridge opened to traffic on October 10, 1938.

DSC_0114_edited-1

The bridge consists of two unique spans, the original Blue Water Bridge,  opened in 1938 and renovated in 1999, is a three-lane westbound bridge. The  second Blue Water Bridge, which carries three lanes of eastbound traffic, is an  impressive modern bridge opened in 1997. State-of-the-art facilities make the  Blue Water Bridge crossing one of the smoothest and most modern crossings  in the world.

DSC_0129_edited-1

The Second Blue Water Bridge was constructed between June 1995 and July    1997 at a cost of $41.3 million (for the Michigan half).  When this project was    completed, both eastbound and westbound traffic were placed on the new  structure while the original Blue Water Bridge was renovated at an estimated cost  of $21.3 million (for the Michigan half). Both structures were in full operation in  November 1999.  The Second Blue Water Bridge now carries three lanes of  eastbound traffic and the original Blue Water bridge carries three lanes of  westbound traffic.

Today the area is a tourist attraction with small parks and many other facilities allowing one to spend several hours here enjoying the bridge, water, huge barges and small craft passing by, as well as many other attractions on land.

Grand Turk

A little known paradise, Grand Turk is a beautiful island seldom visited by most. Until recently, cruise ships ignored the tiny island completely.

Best known because the first manned space flight by John Glenn splashed down near here, little else was ever disclosed or written about this tiny island.

Even the fact that Christopher Columbus landed here during his maiden voyage to the new world was for the most part ignored.

An island of only about five thousand inhabitants situated between Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, it was once home to five NASA tracking stations, all of which have now been abandoned, except for one which has been turned into a night club.

Today, all of that is changing, the island is rapidly becoming a destination for many cruise ships and several new resorts are being planned. This beautiful island will soon become one of the most popular vacation sites in the Caribbean.

With beauty such as this , the island can’t remain hidden forever.

Barbados: Christ Church, Chase Vault

When traveling one never knows for sure what surprises await them. This is  one of the benefits of travel and is one of the reasons travel is so alluring to so many people.
Chase Vault, Christ Church Barbados

On a recent cruise ship visit to Barbados we were disappointed when the photo tour we wanted to partake in was sold out, so we opted for another tour instead. As it turned out , I was glad we made the change.

One of the stops was at Christ Church located in Christ Church Parish. I  had never been here before and as is my usual custom I hadn’t done much research before coming here. I had no idea what this was about, I normally don’t do much research, I have found my adventures normally turn out best if I just follow my nose and let the universe guide me to where I need to be.

Christ Church is a beautiful old church with a history that spans many centuries. Having survived hurricanes, fires and other disasters , it continues today to serve it’s parishioners as it has in the past. One of the most interesting features of the church is the cemetery and the Chase Vault.

The Chase Vault was originally built as a final resting place for some of the early more prominent citizens of the congregation. It was soon discovered that after burial the coffins would move about the vault and be in total disarray upon examination. The vault was sealed with heavy stones, but noises would be heard coming from inside and the contents of the vault would be moved from their original location.

After this phenomenon was observed several times, the parishioners decided to bury the coffins in the cemetery,  and as a result the disturbances ceased.

Several years ago, a visitor decided to take a souvenir home with them. Upon arriving home , they began to experience all sorts of misfortune, and experienced one personal disaster after another. They returned the souvenir to the crypt and their fortune immediately changed.

I decided to take only photos and leave only footprints.

Now you can follow me on Kindle.
