Grand Turk

A little known paradise, Grand Turk is a beautiful island seldom visited by most. Until recently, cruise ships ignored the tiny island completely.

Best known because the first manned space flight by John Glenn splashed down near here, little else was ever disclosed or written about this tiny island.

Even the fact that Christopher Columbus landed here during his maiden voyage to the new world was for the most part ignored.

An island of only about five thousand inhabitants situated between Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, it was once home to five NASA tracking stations, all of which have now been abandoned, except for one which has been turned into a night club.

Today, all of that is changing, the island is rapidly becoming a destination for many cruise ships and several new resorts are being planned. This beautiful island will soon become one of the most popular vacation sites in the Caribbean.

With beauty such as this , the island can’t remain hidden forever.

Venice Florida

Venice, a city of approximately 21,000, is located in Sarasota County Florida. The city’s early as well as present claim to fame lies in it’s airport located on the south side of town.

Built in the early 1940’s by the United States Army Air Force it served as a military training facility base, being used as well by( ATC), Air Transport Command to deliver US built aircraft to Britain. As soon as the war was over the US government gave the airport to the city of Venice.

The airport has 2, 5000 runways and is  the base of FFTC (Florida Flight Training Center), that does pilot training as well as charter service within Florida and the surrounding states.

Triple Diamond is the main FBO and provides assistance to jet aircraft.

On September 12, 2001, national news and the FBI descended on Venice  as it was discovered that three of the WTC 9/11 terrorists, Mohamed Atta,Marwan Al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah, had all lived in Venice for the purpose of taking flight training lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport. The trio had all enrolled in Huffman Aviation.

Atta’s time in Venice has been chronicled by Daniel Hopsicker in his book,” Welcome to Terrorland.”

Due to the beauty of the area, warm weather, and white sandy beaches ,many of the men and women who. were stationed in Venice during the war came back to make it their permanent home

Having been listed in many circles as the shark’s tooth capital of the world , Venice holds an annual shark’s tooth festival to commemorate the abundance of shark’s teeth(some of which are known to be thousands of years old) that can be found in the area. Teeth can be found by walking the beach and sifting through the sand, although the best results are had by diving off shore. One can only hope to find the teeth without the shark attached. Just kidding, shark attacks are extremely rare,  no shark attacks have been reported in Sarasota County in many many years.

Probably the best area to find shark’s teeth is south of town behind the airport at a beach known as Caspersen’s Beach, although Sharkey’s Beach is also popular, where shovels and scoops can be rented to find teeth anywhere from 1/4 in. to 3 inches and larger.

In the past, due to the near perfect weather and beautiful scenery,Venice has been the winter home for many organizations, including the Kentucky Military Institute as well as the Ringling Circus .

Be it for a short stay or a lifetime home, Venice calls .

Acapulco

Acapulco was named by the Nahua tribe, the name means “where the reeds stood” or place of giant reeds”
Archaeological finds show that when theSpaniards arrived, people had been living around the bay area for about 2,000 years.
The Nahua were conquered by the Aztec empire about a hundred years before it fell to the Spanish conquistadors.
By order of Hernan Cortez, Spanish sailors took the Bahia de Acapulco in 1521. Port and shipbuilding facilities were established and itwas the jumping-off point for further explorations and conquests, such as that of Peru. It became theonly port in the New World authorized to receive Spanish Galleons from the Philippines and China.
All this treasure was an invitation Dutch and English pirates could not resist, and by the 17th century, their ships abounded in the Pacific and along the coastline of Mexico and Baja California.
To ward off the pirates, Fuerte deSan Diego was built atop a low hill overlooking the bay. Because of the seaport’s strategic importance to the Spanish crown, Fuerte de San Diego became a focus of rebellion in1812 when the discontented population roseup against their Spanish colonial rulers in the war of independence.
The royalists were besieged in the fort for four months before finally surrendering to the Mexican troops.
As the capital grew, its citizens began flocking to the Pacific coast for vacations. A new international airport was
built, and by the 1960s Acapulco was a booming resort, its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous set, often from within Mexico, rather than from outside the country.
The city is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre Mountains on the other. Along the Costera Miguel  Ale-man, the cities principle thoroughfare, you’ll find most of the major hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers.
You will also find the cultural heart of the city, known to the locals as Acapulco Traditional. Among the sights is the Fort
San Diego, which protected Acapulco from Dutch and English pirates in the days of Spanish Rule.
Originally constructed in 161 and rebuilt in1776 following a massive earthquake. It is a classic five-point fortress surrounded by a moat.
Acapulco was fist inhabited by primitive Indians. Later on people ofNahuati stock, the Nahoas, came and settled the area. THe name Acapulco derives from the Nahuatl words”acatl” (place of canes). “pol”(to break) and
“co”that indicates place.
The first “tourist” to visit Acapulco was a Chinese Monk by the name of Fa Hsien. As the legend goes, he arrived in Pre-
Historic times around 417 AD, long before Columbus crossed the Atlantic to “discover” America.
Today ,Acapulco remains a popular destination not only a a vcation resort, but a cruise port as well.
