Venice Florida

Venice, a city of approximately 21,000, is located in Sarasota County Florida. The city’s early as well as present claim to fame lies in it’s airport located on the south side of town.

Built in the early 1940’s by the United States Army Air Force it served as a military training facility base, being used as well by( ATC), Air Transport Command to deliver US built aircraft to Britain. As soon as the war was over the US government gave the airport to the city of Venice.

The airport has 2, 5000 runways and is  the base of FFTC (Florida Flight Training Center), that does pilot training as well as charter service within Florida and the surrounding states.

Triple Diamond is the main FBO and provides assistance to jet aircraft.

On September 12, 2001, national news and the FBI descended on Venice  as it was discovered that three of the WTC 9/11 terrorists, Mohamed Atta,Marwan Al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah, had all lived in Venice for the purpose of taking flight training lessons at the Venice Municipal Airport. The trio had all enrolled in Huffman Aviation.

Atta’s time in Venice has been chronicled by Daniel Hopsicker in his book,” Welcome to Terrorland.”

Due to the beauty of the area, warm weather, and white sandy beaches ,many of the men and women who. were stationed in Venice during the war came back to make it their permanent home

Having been listed in many circles as the shark’s tooth capital of the world , Venice holds an annual shark’s tooth festival to commemorate the abundance of shark’s teeth(some of which are known to be thousands of years old) that can be found in the area. Teeth can be found by walking the beach and sifting through the sand, although the best results are had by diving off shore. One can only hope to find the teeth without the shark attached. Just kidding, shark attacks are extremely rare,  no shark attacks have been reported in Sarasota County in many many years.

Probably the best area to find shark’s teeth is south of town behind the airport at a beach known as Caspersen’s Beach, although Sharkey’s Beach is also popular, where shovels and scoops can be rented to find teeth anywhere from 1/4 in. to 3 inches and larger.

In the past, due to the near perfect weather and beautiful scenery,Venice has been the winter home for many organizations, including the Kentucky Military Institute as well as the Ringling Circus .

Be it for a short stay or a lifetime home, Venice calls .

Beer Can Island: Manatee County

The west coast of Florida, or the Sun coast as it is commonly and appropriately named, has many beautiful and relatively unspoiled areas for the visitor to explore and enjoy.

The west coast of Florida has a more laid back atmosphere and thus less of the traffic, hustle and bustle of it’s neighboring coast on the east side of Florida.

One such area is the Bradenton-Sarasota area. Located a short hours drive south of Tampa, the area has several of the best beaches  anywhere in the country.

One such beach is the Brandenton Beach which is located west of the city of Bradenton, Florida. Driving down the small quaint road adjacent to the beach, you get the feeling you are  driving down a beach in the 1950s. All the little shops and restaurants still maintain the quaint look of that era.

Beer Can Island

Crossing the bridge leading into Sarasota County and looking right , Beer Can Island is seen on the right. Named because the island offers an opportunity for boaters to enjoy their favorite beverage while enjoying the beauty of the area.

Despite the name the island is family friendly with several boats and boaters frequently visiting the little piece of paradise. In my travels, with it’s many shops, several restaurants and laid back attitude, I have found this to be one of the most beautiful areas in all of Florida.

I post a new article every week, stay in touch on your Kindle.

Florida:Sarasota,”Jewel” of the Sun Coast

One of the “Jewels” of Florida is Sarasota,

Located half way down the suncoast, Sarasota has become a premier vacation spot for families.

With it’s white sandy beaches and friendly citizens it leaves little to be desired.

Boasting a population of nearly 60,000, the actual population is much larger when the surrounding small hamlets and barrier islands are included.

Siesta Key is probably the most well known and popular destination of people visiting the area. Known for the white sugary quartz crystal sand that covers the beach, Siesta Key has become known as one of the top two or three  beaches in the United States.

Some of the other keys included in Sarasota’s official limits are  Lido Key,St.Armand’s Key, Otter Key,Coon Key,Bird Key and  Longboat Key which has become one of the top ten “premier” addresses in the country.

Siesta Key

If one can drag themselves from the pristine beaches , there are many activities to consume one’s time.  Everything from the arts, theater, shopping, fine dining, and even minor league baseball as well as major league spring training is available for everyone to enjoy.

Many MLB teams have made Sarasota either their spring training home or a home for their minor league teams, including the Cincinnati Reds,Boston Red Sox, and now the Baltimore Orioles have come to call Sarasota home .

Civic, church, and fraternal organizations of every shape, size and desire add to the mix making it almost impossible to be bored in this “big” little city.Sarasota boasts one of the largest and most active Shriners Temples in all of Shrinedom.

Sarasota has become a vacation paradise and favorite get-a-away for families. Because Sarasota is relatively unheard of and the lack of cheap hotels  It typically doesn’t draw the “spring break” crowd.
Mostly, individually owned condos line the beaches, many of which can be rented on a weekly basis, thus adding to the family atmosphere.

The city of Bradenton was formed in 1943 when the state legislature merged the two cites of Bradenton and Manatee.
Bradenton is located on US 41 between Sarasota and Tampa, the area is surrounded by waterways both saltwater and fresh water. From south of Bradenton Beach to the Tampa area are over 20 miles of Florida’s most beautiful beaches. Many of the beaches are shaded by tall Australian Pines.

Moving to Sarasota Florida

Bell Rock Sedona Arizona

Your ARIZONA Superstore

We had been livi
ng in Sedona Arizona for six years and although it is one of the most beautiful areas on the planet , after living there for a while, there really isn’t much to do but play golf and go to movies, I like doing both, but not 5 days a week!
After visiting various places in the west, such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego, we decided to head back east and make our home in Florida.
Wanting to live on the west coast of Florida and going on the advice of people we had talked to we decided to move to Sarasota Florida even though we had never been there.

Florida is pretty much the same, scenery wise, it’s just a matter of finding the area that appeals to oneself, so we decided that if we didn’t like Sarasota, it would be easy to move somewhere else if the notion struck us. It would be a lot easier than burning up all that jet fuel flying back and forth from Arizona.

Not knowing anything about Sarasota, we began making plans by doing research on the internet, the first goal was to find a place to live, as my Ford Explorer would not make a good motel room!

We wanted to rent for a while, as that would give us time to find a house or condo, as luck would have it, we found an apartment in a complex that was just opening. With that mission accomplished, we began in earnest to make plans for the cross country trip ahead of us.
As I had no one to drive i , the next challenge would be to transport my Ford Explorer to Florida, we decided the best way would be to drive it out ahead of time and come back to Arizona in time for the big move. I would also be able to stop and see my family in Indiana by taking a slight detour.

I began the trip by leaving Sedona at 4 AM, hoping to make Indiana in two days. Once I determined how to satisfy the needs of my stomach, gas tank and bladder  at the same time, the trip went pretty well!

The trip through Arizona, Mew Mexico, and  Texas went rather smoothly, it was rather enjoyable watch the scenery pass and noticing the changes as I headed east.

The sun was fading in the west as I approached Oklahoma City,  about half of my journey was complete, so this would be a good place to bed down for the night.

Next morning at sunup I was headed for Indiana! This was going to be  a piece of cake!!

Entering the freeway , I began to notice the vehicle was warmer than it should be, Oh, NO, the A/C had quite working, this was the middle of July, the heat index was going to 120, this wasn’t going to be fun!

Stocking up on gas and water in Joplin Mo., I headed for Indiana, trying to balance lowering the windows with keeping the wind noise as low as possible, I arrived in Effingham Illinois mid afternoon.

I would need to stock up on gas, food and water before going any further. After 4 large glasses of ice tea, a hearty meal, and a full tank it was on to Indiana!

Because of the heavy consumption of ice tea, I barely made Terra Haute befor having to stop again.

Driving towards Indianapolis, I noticed how much corn there was in Indiana, I had often heard the expression from visitors, but it never really struck home until  now!

I told my dad that I probably wouldn’t be in until the following morning, so I think he was pleasantly surprised when I rolled in about dark, I thnk he knew I would probably make it on Sunday.

After a short visit, it would be on to Florida to see what kind of future we had in store for us, it sure is hot here, I hope Florida isn’t worse, been a long time since I have experienced humidity!

baby boomers

Each generation from the beginning of our country has contributed to what our country has become. By the same token, no one is perfect. Consequently, each generation has done and will continue to perform acts that it would have been better if some other course of action was taken.
The baby boomers have contributed much and have been blamed for the decline of America. What is the true story?
