New year’s Eve in Cairo

Written By; Gary Wonning

New Year’s Eve in Cairo, it doesn’t get any better than that. The party at the hotel swimming pool was to begin at 9 pm. We had been in Egypt for a week, we knew they really meant 10. The party was held around an H-shaped swimming pool behind the hotel. The area, covered with a beautiful middle eastern canopy created an exotic atmosphere. To top it all off, lighted candles were floating in the pool. We hadn’t eaten since lunch and assumed dinner would come soon. We sat down and ordered a Stella, the Egyptian beer.

The party began, the first song the band  played was the “Peppermint Twist”.  The band continued playing American music for quite a while. Later, as the evening wore on, they played music from all over the world.
