Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings

Art Prints

Here is another excerpt from David Barton’s book “Jefferson Lies”. It explains the political jockeying that implicated Thomas Jefferson in the scandal.

In 1998 the journal Science released the results of a DNA investigation into whether Jefferson had fathered any children with  his slave Sally Hemings, specifically her first child, Thomas, or her fifth child, Eston.  In conjunction with its announcement, Pulitzer Prize– winning historian Professor Joseph Ellis wrote an accompanying article in the journal Nature announcing that the question was now settled – that DNA testing had conclusively proved that Thomas Jefferson had indeed fathered a Hemings child, thus scientifically affirming a two-centuries-old rumor.  That 1998 announcement was actually relevant to events occurring at the time, for it came at the commencement of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment proceedings for lying under oath to a grand jury about his sexual activities with a young intern inside the Oval Office. News reports immediately pounced on the fortuitous DNA announcement, arguing that if a man as great as Thomas Jefferson had engaged in sexual trysts, then President Clinton should not face inquiries about his sexual misbehavior. After all, such conduct had not diminished the stature of Jefferson, they argued, so it should not be allowed to weaken Clinton’s. Professor Ellis agreed, candidly admitting, “President William Jefferson Clinton also has a vested interest in this [DNA] revelation.”  (Shortly before his bombshell announcement about Jefferson, Ellis had added his signature as a cosigner of a New York Times ad opposing the impeachment of Clinton.  Henry Gee, a staff writer for Nature who also wrote a piece as part of the initial revelation, similarly acknowledged that the DNA report provided much-needed cover for President Clinton: The parallels between the story of Jefferson’s sexual indiscretions and the travails of the current President are close. Thomas Jefferson came close to impeachment – but the scandal did not affect his popularity and he won the 1804 Presidential election by a landslide. And if President William Jefferson Clinton has cause to curse the invention of DNA fingerprinting, the latest report shows that it has a long reach indeed – back to the birth of the United States.

However, only eight weeks after the initial blockbuster DNA story was issued, it was pulled and rewritten, quietly and without fanfare, with the scientific researcher who had conducted the DNA test acknowledging that the test actually had not proven that Jefferson fathered any children with Hemings.  It turned out that the results had been dramatically overstated: there were twenty-six Jefferson males living in the area, of whom ten might have been the father of a Hemings child, and Thomas was only one possibility. But the admission of the misportrayed DNA testing results did not make the same splash in the national headlines, for it aided no agenda. Doing justice to Jefferson’s reputation was not deemed in and of itself to be a worthy national consideration, so the retraction story was generally buried or ignored. Consider the damage done by this false and inflammatory reporting. Ask any citizen today whether it has been scientifically proven that Jefferson fathered illegitimate children with Hemings, and they will likely answer with a resounding “Yes!”

Later evidence would show it was probably Jefferson’s brother who fathered the children.

Wisdom lost through the ages

There is an extreme shortage of common sense in today’s world, When looking back in history, I soon discovered this has always been a problem, Benjamin Franklin once said, ”Of all the senses, common sense seems to be the one that is used the least.”

As simple as it may seem, many seem to be totally oblivious to it. Most if not all of the problems the world faces today could be solved if people would just sit back and think about what would seem to be the most obvious and simple solution to any issue. Often times people tend to over complicate the issues when an easy and simple solution would be obvious.

A Sad State of Affairs in Philadelphia

I happened to be talking to a gentleman yesterday who had lived in Philadelphia for a few years.

Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation was once founded on Judeo-Christian values, as was our nation.

In today’s world, it has changed immensely, gangs roam the streets making it unsafe to be in many areas.

He was telling me that if someone discovers you are a conservative, they immediately think you are retarded and uneducated, so much for open-mindedness and compassion. Whatever happened to the city of brotherly love?

Heaven forbid, they discover you go to church. By doing so, they believe you are some sort of evil demon set out to destroy the world and everything therein contained.

Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother

The  fifth of the Ten Commandments  has  been forgotten in today’s world.

How many of the young people of today honor this commandment?

Many don’t. I know it’s been said of every generation, but more so than ever people no longer respect each other and particularly those who are our elders.

It was drilled into us to respect our elders, especially our parents and grandparents, regardless of what they did, and we were reprimanded when we didn’t show respect.

That didn’t mean we agreed with them all of the time or approved of everything they did and said.

It meant that we respected their opinion and would consider what they believed and why they believed it. Their life experience meant something to us, and it was a manner of common courtesy.

We may have been thinking it for a short time, but we would never have said what some say to their parents today.

Of course, they were quick to remind us that we weren’t dry behind the ears yet, and when we grew up, we would think differently.

Maybe that is where we went wrong, we didn’t remind them that they were young and inexperienced in life, soon life would teach them differently.

Society has taught us to be extra sensitive to others feelings, so sensitive we have neglected to be tough when we needed to be, for their own good.

Just another indication of how political correctness is destroying our way of life.

There are always outside influences that you feel you simply cannot control. It is how one reacts to these circumstances that determine the final outcome. It is these choices that determine our success or failure. Everything happens for a reason. Seemingly on a physical level, we don’t seem to be able to control our reality, however on some subconscious level, we choose to participate in every single event that comes our way. We may not be aware of it, but that is how the universe works.

Venice Florida Army Air Force

Information gathered from Wikipedia and other sources.

The story of Venice Army Air Field begins in 1941 when influential citizens in Venice, Florida sent a telegram to the War Department offering 3,000 acres of land near the town of 500 citizens for use as an Army campsite. The War Department responded by sending a military detail to Venice to survey the site. The survey was successful and it was announced on 16 July 1941 that the site was selected for an “Anti-Aircraft Artillery Installation”. Further surveys were made by the United States Army that summer, but then nothing happened. For reasons never made clear, the land would never be used by anti-aircraft artillery.

In early 1942, the Army Air Forces became interested in the site and developing a training center on it. The plan was to establish a small training facility to accommodate about 1,000 men with a possibility of expanding it later. Its mission would not be for forces directly engaged in combat, but for the Air Service Command whose members would work in the rear echelon and would relieve combat squadrons of maintenance and housekeeping details at air bases behind the lines.

The trained unit would be designated a “Service Group” and would serve several combat units flying from different forward airstrips. The Service Group would be equipped with the necessary resources to fully support the combat units by providing station security, mess halls, aircraft parts supply, base administration, aircraft mechanics, communications, medical, finance, and all the other necessary support services needed, and also be mobile enough to follow the combat units.

With these requirements, Army Air Force construction personnel began arriving in Venice during May 1942 and within a short time, the first load of trucks loaded with tent frames began to arrive. This signaled the start of construction with began in early June. Within a short time, construction of two 5,000′ concrete runways aligned E/W (09/27) and NW/SE (14/32) began to the original design of the ground station and over the next several months the once overgrown and vacant land was converted into an Army Air Base. A third runway, aligned NE/SW (05/22) was later added in the spring of 1943. The ground station initially had few amenities, but eventually would be ready for it task of training personnel for the Service Groups.

Photography Prints

The 27th Service Group would have the mission of training new Service Groups prior to their deployment to the overseas combat Air Forces. The advance element of the 27th, the 37th Service Squadron arrived at the station in July 1942 to perform guard duty and to prepare the base for an official opening. The Air Force opened the station, initially named the Service Group Training Center officially on 7 July, and it was placed under the jurisdiction of Air Service Command. Over the next several weeks, additional personnel were assigned (the Hq. & Hq. Sq. and the 826th QM Company. Later, the 1063rd Signal Co., the 90th Service Sq., and the 1728th, 1729th, 2064th and 2065th QM Companies)

Wartime tar paper barracks commonly found on temporary training airfields such as Venice AAF

A common type of building found were orderly rooms and ground training classrooms such as this

Although open, the station was far from ready to perform its mission. Early life at the Service Group Training Center is officially described as “rugged”. Necessity demanded that the skilled specialists of the 27th be put to work pulling stumps, cutting weeds and doing general clean-up jobs. No furloughs were given, and the men lived in tents.

During the balance of 1942, the primitive living condition at the base were improved. Construction of a large number of facilities based on standardized plans and architectural drawings, with the buildings designed to be the “cheapest, temporary character with structural stability only sufficient to meet the needs of the service which the structure is intended to fulfill during the period of its contemplated war use” was underway. To conserve critical materials, most facilities were constructed of wood, concrete, brick, gypsum board and concrete asbestos. Metal was sparsely used. The station was designed to be nearly self-sufficient, with not only hangars, but barracks, warehouses, hospitals, dental clinics, dining halls, and maintenance shops were needed. There were libraries, social clubs for officers, and enlisted men, and stores to buy living necessities. Finally, in December 1942, the first training unit, 80th Service Group arrived and the mission of the Service Group Training Center began.

However, it was found that the men of the 80th Service Group, had not received any technical training prior to their arrival at Venice. Training would have to be performed at Venice and as a result, their deployment overseas would have to be delayed. The school had to make significant changes to its curriculum that would include basic military indoctrination and technical instruction in the jobs the men would be to accommodate instruction on skills which the men were expected to have when deployed overseas. As a result, several new courses of instruction were added to the planned syllabus. As a result, when new units arrived for training, the training status of the men would be reviewed, and those requiring additional training were immediately assigned to the appropriate schools.

By the end of October 1943, seven service groups had been trained at Venice, and recognition of the school grew and curriculum changes were made by reports back from throughout the far-flung Service Command as turning out men who knew their jobs well. Days whirled by like kaleidoscopic visions as GIs worked hard at learning the skills needed to support the war by day, and filled the theatre, “Beer Garden” (built by the GI’s themselves) and the recreation centers of surrounding towns at night.

Upwards of 200 German prisoners of war were moved to Venice AAF in February 1945 . POWs were assigned various manual labor details. Some worked in the motor pool and others were permanently assigned performing various civil engineering duties such as electricians, plumbing, painting and other trades work, depending on their skills. Others worked in the mess halls, medical clinic or in the local Venice community and local farms in the area.

As the war began drawing to an end in Europe, and later in the summer of 1945 in the Pacific, the number of trainees and the level of activity at the base was reduced rapidly. With the Japanese surrender and the end of World War II most of the temporary training bases such as Venice Army Airfield were put on inactive status and eventually closed.

Third Air Force began the process of shutting down training activities completely, the field receiving the last class of pilot trainees from the closing Page Field in September. In October Venice AAF received notice that it also would be inactivated by the end of the month.

The field was decommissioned and the City of Venice Florida was granted a license to operate the airport on Many 20, 1946. On June 10, 1947, by Quit Claim Deed from the United States of America to the City of Venice under provisions of the Surplus Property Act of 1944, the City was designated as a sponsor to operate the facility.

What has government done for you?

Down through the ages, and especially today, many people think it is the government’s job to take care of them from cradle to grave and supply their every want and need. How good is the government at that?

Taking our own government for example, how have they performed at looking after our best interests?

Let’s start at the beginning, even before we had an official government. A good place would be to start at Valley Forge, even though we could find evidence of their self-serving interests even before that. Congress was supposed to have Valley Forge prepared for General Washington and his troops when they arrived that cold December morning.

Cabins and shelter w supposed to have been built, food was to be provided, instead when General Washington and his forces arrived all they found was an open field. No shelter and no food. As a result, many died from disease, and starvation, many froze to death.

Instead of fixing the problem, congress only fought among themselves and created greater hardships for the war effort. General Washington was left to scrounge for himself and then congress criticized him for some of the measures he took, and for the horrible condition his troops suffered due to congress’s neglect. Some things never change.

Rigid Secularism: Outright Deceit

Art Prints

Another excerpt taken from David Barton’s “Jeffersons Lies“, explains the outright deceit those on the left often use.

Another tactic associated with Rigid Secularism includes outright deception. Consider Ken Davis’ best-selling Don’t Know Much About History. In that work, he reminds readers of Patrick Henry’s famous speech: Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? … I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!  Strikingly, the only phrase missing from the quotation  is Henry’s fervent appeal to God: “Forbid it, Almighty God!”  Similarly, Davis likewise edited the Mayflower Compact so that it reads: We whose names are underwritten … doe by these presents solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and one of anotherr, covenant and combine our selves togeather into a civil body politick, for our better ordering and perservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by vertue hearof to enacte, constitute, and frame such just and equal lawes, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meete for the generall good of the Colonie, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience … The portion omitted by Davis in the quotation is the Pilgrims’ unequivocal declaration that their work was “undertaken for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”

a lutheran church against a sunny blue sky.

What is meant by the separation of church and state?

The day after Congress adopted the first amendment, they sent a message to George Washington. They asked him to declare a day of Thanksgiving to God.

Congress wanted to show America’s appreciation for the opportunity to create a new government in peace and tranquility.

The founders did not intend for God to be separate from our official acts. The founders just did not want a national denomination, such as in England.

They did not want an established church, an established church would take away religious liberty.
They did not want an established church that could force people to worship against their will or support it with private tax dollars.

Sometimes you just have to press on.

The trip had not gone well.

A year long planned trip to the outback of Australia had gotten off to a rocky start. Sometimes the best-laid plans of mice and men  go astray.

The group of one hundred fifty  photographers and writers had encountered many difficulties, mainly in transportation. The organization we were traveling with planned the trip using discounted last minute  airline tickets and tours to keep the price down. The fly in the ointment came about because we had inadvertently decided to travel on  a school holiday in Australia, as a result obtaining flights became extremely difficult.  In many cases, the airlines were completely booked and getting where we wanted when we wanted became next to impossible.

Because of the complexities encountered, Barry Barker, the group leader decided to call a meeting at the hotel in Cairnes where most of us were staying.

He explained the situation fully and stated that if anyone wanted to cancel the trip and go home, they could, their unused money would be refunded.

As I looked around, expecting the worst, no one raised their hands. We were all in for the duration.

After many changes and grumblings from some of the participants our missions were accomplished, we had many once in a lifetime experiences and encounters that we couldn’t have had anywhere else.

The photos and stories that came out of that month in the outback were incredible. None of which would have been possible if we had gone home in the beginning.

Sometimes you just have to suck it up, go with the flow and enjoy the ride, it always comes turns out for the best.

A modern day vision quest

A modern day vision quest

At this period of time in the history of man, there is probably more individual searching being done into the theories behind the origin of the human race, what happens after death, the possibility of life on other planets, and what our relationship is to these life forms if they do exist.

There are millions of people who are questioning the existence of God, who he really is, and what is my relationship with him? Is he someone who mysteriously floats around on a cloud watching and judging us from above like some bigger than life Santa Claus, or is he, like many of the esoteric sciences claim, a part of our inner Self, whom we have constant contact with, someone whom we and everything in the universe are connected and are thus one? Each of us in our own way is experiencing what God is, and thus we are each a part of God, thus we are God!

This book is a brief account of my search for my own truth as I know it today, although, many times the people with me seemed to experience nothing or a totally different reality, everything stated actually happened, according to my own perception.

The Vision of George Washington

Art Prints

“George Washington’s Vision”

In the National Tribune, 1880, an article appeared giving an account of the “Vision of Washington” at Valley Forge. The account was told by a gentleman named Anthony Sherman, who supposedly was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78. The story has been published several times.

This afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of her presence. A second, a third and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes.

By this time, I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless, as though it had become paralyzed.

A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed as if it had become filled with sensations, and luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; all were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

Presently I heard a voice saying, “Son of the Republic, look and learn,” while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly, I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a stranger scene. Before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world — Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific.

“Son of the Republic,” said the same mysterious voice as before, “look and learn.” At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel, standing or rather floating in mid-air, between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand, he sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while with his left hand he cast some on Europe. Immediately a cloud raised from these countries and joined in mid-ocean. For a while, it remained stationary and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through it at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American people.

A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows in sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, “Son of the Republic, look and learn,” I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them.

Again, I heard the mysterious voice say, “Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn.” At this, the dark shadowy angel turned his face southward, and from Africa, I saw an ill-omened specter approach our land. It flitted slowly over every town and city of the latter. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other. As I continued looking I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light, on which was traced the word “Union,” bearing the American flag which he placed between the divided nation, and said, “Remember ye are brethren.” Instantly, the inhabitants, casting from them their weapons became friends once more and united around the National Standard.

“And again I heard the mysterious voice saying “Son of the Republic, look and learn.” At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia, and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: From each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America. Our country was enveloped in this volume of cloud, and I saw these vast armies devastate the whole county and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of sword, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, “Son of the Republic, look and learn” When the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast. “Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shone the word Union, and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were will nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle.

Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, “Son of the Republic, look and learn.” As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious!

Then once more I beheld the villages, towns, and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice: “While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last.” And taking from his brow the crown on which blazoned the word “Union,” he placed it upon the Standard while the people, kneeling down, said, “Amen.”

The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last, saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld. This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, “Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, but in this greatest conflict the whole world united shall not prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land, and the Union.” With these words, the vision vanished, and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown to me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States.
