The Funeral

While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his
collar wilt.

Apparently, his five-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed,
they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister’s son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: “Glory be unto the Faaaather. .and unto the Sonnn ……and into the hole he gooooes.”

What is meant by the separation of church and state?

There has been much debate over the years about what the founding fathers meant about the separation of church and state. In recent times there has been much disinformation about how they actually believed, especially George Washington. In this short Ebook the author tries to explain how they actually felt.

Library of Congress Washington D.C.

Art Prints

The Library of Congress was established by an act of Congress in 1800.  President John Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of the seat of government from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington D.C. The legislation described a reference library for Congress only, containing “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress – and for putting up a suitable apartment for containing them therein…”

library of congress

Originally established with $5,000 appropriated by the legislation, the library was housed in the new Capitol until August 1814. Invading British troops set fire to the Capitol Building, burning and pillaging the contents of the small library.

Within a month, retired President Thomas Jefferson offered his personal library as a replacement. Jefferson had spent nearly 50 years accumulating books, “putting by everything which related to America, and indeed whatever was rare and valuable in every science”; his library was considered to be one of the finest in the United States. In offering his collection to Congress, Jefferson anticipated controversy over the nature of his collection, which included books in foreign languages and volumes of philosophy, science, literature, and other topics not normally viewed as part of a legislative library. He wrote, “I do not know that it contains any branch of science which Congress would wish to exclude from their collection; there is, in fact, no subject to which a Member of Congress may not have occasion to refer.”

In January 1815, Congress accepted Jefferson’s offer, appropriating $23,950 for his 6,487 books, and the foundation was laid for a great national library. The Jeffersonian concept of universality, the belief that all subjects are important to the library of the American legislature, is the philosophy and rationale behind the comprehensive collecting policies of today’s Library of Congress.

Carrying on Jefferson’s good work,  Ainsworth Rand Spofford, Librarian of Congress from 1864 to 1897, applied Jefferson’s philosophy on a grand scale and built the Library into a national institution. In addition, Spofford was responsible for the copyright law of 1870, which required all copyright applicants to send to the Library two copies of their work. This resulted in a flood of books, pamphlets, maps, music, prints, and photographs. Facing a shortage of shelf space at the Capitol, Spofford convinced Congress of the need for a new building, and in 1873 Congress authorized a competition to design plans for the new Library.

In 1886, after many proposals and much controversy, Congress authorized construction of a new Library building in the style of the Italian Renaissance in accordance with a design prepared by Washington architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz.

The Congressional authorization was successful because of the hard work of two key Senators: Daniel W. Voorhees (Indiana), who served as chairman of the Joint Committee from 1879 to 1881, and Justin S. Morrill (Vermont), chairman of Senate Committee on Buildings and Grounds.

In 1888, General Thomas Lincoln Casey, chief of the Army Corps of Engineers, was placed in charge of construction. His chief assistant was Bernard R. Green, who was intimately involved with the building until his death in 1914. Beginning in 1892, a new architect, Edward Pearce Casey, the son of General Casey, began to supervise the interior work, including sculptural and painted decoration by more than 50 American artists.

Today’s Library of Congress is an unparalleled world resource. The collection of more than 158 million items includes more than 36 million cataloged books and other print materials in 460 languages; more than 69 million manuscripts; the largest rare book collection in North America; and the world’s largest collection of legal materials, films, maps, sheet music and sound recordings.

Goodnight Prayers

A father put his 3-year-old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers — which she ended by saying: “God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma and goodbye Grandpa.” The father asked, “Why did you say goodbye Grandpa?” The little girl said, “I don’t know Daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do.”

The next day grandpa died.

The father thought it was a strange coincidence, but a few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers, which ended like this: “God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and goodbye Grandma.”

The next day the grandmother died. Oh my gosh, thought the father, this kid is in contact with the other side! He made sure he listened to her prayers every night.

Sure enough, several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say: “God bless Mommy and goodbye Daddy.”

He practically went into shock. He couldn’t sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch sent in and watched the clock. He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch, and jumping at every sound. Finally midnight arrived, he breathed a sigh of relief and went home.

When he got home his wife said, “I’ve never seen you work so late, what’s the matter?” He said, “I don’t want to talk about it — I’ve just spent the worst day of my life.”

“You think you had a bad day?” she replied. “You’ll never believe what happened to me: This morning my golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson!”

From one life to another

Is there life after death? Do we really have encounters with beings from other dimensions and planets? Is there proof?

A Second Chance

YOUR ONLINE INSPIRATIONAL SUPERSTORE

Often times we think we only get one chance at life if we make a bad decision there is no going back. Unless it is a major life altering
event, we always get a second chance. It may take a while because once a decision is made and the universe goes about fulfilling our wishes, we do have to live with the consequences.

However, the laws of karma always plays itself out and as soon as we begin to desire a different future, the universe again begins to arrange itself so we can have our hearts desire.  Your second chance will come, you just need to prepare for it and be ready to take advantage of it when the opportunity arises.

There is always a reason something doesn’t materialize, many times there are life lessons to be learned and once the lessons are absorbed into our consciousness, we find the second chance is justifiably the correct choice. The first opportunity was just a practice run to prepare us for the real thing. This is sometimes hard to understand when the first opportunity is missed, we can often unnecessarily regret passing up what we thought was our Golden Opportunity.

How do you recognize the second chances that come your way?

You will begin to see a pattern developing, a pattern that relates positively to the first circumstance and begins to stimulate your
consciousness that something big is about to happen.

You will begin to start thinking of the long ago opportunity and remember the good feelings you had. This is the time to let go of it and start thinking about how your experience from that time can help you realize your dream. In the process, forgive others as well as yourself, realize it was all meant as a learning experience and move on.

Develop a positive attitude, expect the best and look for the good in all situations, leave all negativity behind you, don’t think even one
negative thought , focus on what you would like the  final outcome to be. It is very important to expect a positive outcome and what you desire or something better, sometimes the universe has a better plan than we can imagine. You will have a choice as to accept the outcome or pass it up, don’t always take the first dog out of the chute, there will be other  chances, if you desire something better, wait.

Learn to live one day at a time, when the day is finished, be done with it, it’s over and you can’t change the past, this is part of the learning process as you progress toward enlightenment. Don’t spend needless hours worrying about what you did wrong or could have done differently, there are no mistakes or accidents, only learning experiences.

As long as you maintain a positive attitude and focus on your goals it will all end with your highest good in mind.

Wisdom lost through the ages

There is an extreme shortage of common sense in today’s world, When looking back in history, I soon discovered this has always been a problem, Benjamin Franklin once said, ”Of all the senses, common sense seems to be the one that is used the least.” As obvious as it may seem, many seem to be totally oblivious to it. Most, if not all of the problems the world faces today could be solved if people would just sit back and think about what would seem to be the most obvious and simple solution to any issue. Often times people tend to overcomplicate the issues. I often think back to what my parents and grandparents believed and said, at the time I thought they were totally out of their mind and ignored it. I now wish I would have listened and followed their advice. It is now evident they were a lot smarter than we gave them credit for. Many times, in today’s world, the schools and universities can no longer be counted on to teach truth and values that will guide someone through life.

Veterinarian’s Christmas

RECORD ALL YOUR MEMORIES.

It is the night before Christmas and I’m in my truck.
I’ll be home before daylight with any luck.
I’ve got a prolapse behind me and a dystocia to go –
Wouldn’t you know it’s starting to snow.

I pulled in the barn, “Doc, I sure hated to phone ya -“
“I’ve got a heifer that’s calving and a colt with pneumonia.”
I examined the heifer; posterior presentation
And the cervix was tight – incomplete dilation!

I cleaned up my tools and put on my jacket.
I was headed to the truck when I heard the racket.
I peeked ’round the corner, my gosh it’s a deer!
And a fat little man dressed in red standing near.

The deer was standing holding up a front hoof.
From the looks of things he’d fallen off the roof.
The man looked over my way and asked me to help.
I couldn’t resist the kind little elf.

I examined the deer’s carpus to see if it was broke.
Then to my amazement the reindeer spoke!
He spoke quite firmly, his voice didn’t quiver.
“We’ve got to keep going, we’ve got gifts to deliver.”

I said, “He needs x-rays, stall rest, restricted motion.
The last thing he should do is fly over the ocean!”
Then Santa replied, “It’s up to Donner.”
And Donner said something about duty and honor.

So I gave him a dose of bute and flunixin
Wondering if I was breaking some government restriction.
I fashioned a splint-bandage and wrapped it on tight.
Standing there in his harness he made quite a sight.

They promised they’d go see a vet the next day,
so with some final instructions I sent them on their way.
I stood mouth wide open as they flew out of sight.
Santa yelled, “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

Holiday Merger

Business News:

Continuing the current trend back towards turn-of-the-century monopolies, it was announced today at a press
conference that Christmas and Chanukah will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works for about 1300 years, ever since the rise of the Muslim Empire.

While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the overhead cost of having twelve days of Christmas and eight days of Chanukah was becoming prohibitive for both sides. By combining forces, we’re told, the world will be able
to enjoy consistently high quality service during the Fifteen Days of Christmukah, as the new holiday is being called. Massive layoffs are expected, with lords a-leaping and maids a-milking being the hardest hit.

As part of the conditions of the agreement, the letters on the dreydl, currently in Hebrew, will be replaced by Latin, thus becoming unintelligible to a wider audience. Also, instead of translating to “A great miracle happened there,” the message on the dreydl will be the more generic “Miraculous stuff happens.”

In exchange, it is believed that Jews will be allowed to use Santa Claus and his vast merchandising resources for buying and delivering their gifts. In fact, one of the sticking points holding up the agreement for at least three hundred years was the question of whether Jewish children could leave milk and cookies for Santa even after having eaten meat for
dinner. A breakthrough came last year, when Oreos were finally declared to be Kosher. All sides appeared happy about this development except for Santa’s dentist.

A spokesman for Christmas, Inc., declined to say whether a takeover of Kwanzaa might not be in the works as well. He merely pointed out that were it not for the independent existence of Kwanzaa, the merger between Christmas and Chanukah might indeed be seen as an unfair cornering of the holiday market. Fortunately for all concerned, he said, Kwanzaa will help to maintain the competitive balance.

He then closed the press conference by leading all present in a rousing rendition of “Oy, Come All Ye Faithful.”
