Alpena, Michigan

In spite of it’s small population,11,000,Alpena is the largest city in the sparsely populated northeast Michigan area. The cultural and commercial hub of the area ,Alpena and Traverse City are considered to be the two anchor cities in Northern Michigan.

Originally a part of Anomickee County, it was founded in 1840 and in 1843 the name was changed to Alpena. A Native American word meaning “Good partridge country.” This came at a time when there was a great effort to rename many of the Michigan cities.

Known at “The Sunrise Side,” because of it’s location on the east shore of Lake Huron, it began as a large commercial fishing area, and later was also shaped by the logging industry.

In February of 2007, Bizjournals ranked Alpena as teh hottest retirement community in the Great Lakes region and also ranked it number forty-four nationally.

The Alpena County Court House and Temple Beth El , one of the oldest synagogues in the United States are among the notable building s in teh town.

The Olde Owl Tavern , a quaint and rustic restaurant located downtown is a favorite eating establishment .

Scoops, a popular ice cream shoppe has endured many changes in the town.
