Gone are the days of old, when plantation life in the south exemplified elegant living at it’s finest.
In a day when life was hard, and many of the comforts of modern day life was nonexistent, people carved a few of the niceties of life out of the daily grind.
Although the nation had many ills in those days, and for many life wasn’t much better than it had been for generations, there were many signs that a better life, or the opportunity for a better life, was on the horizon.
These photos from Middleton Place, a plantation just outside of Charleston, South Carolina display some of the beauty from those times.

Many of the old plantations have fallen into ruin and thus disappeared. Two that remain, Drayton Hall, which has survived two wars and a hurricane and Middleton place are located just outside Charleston South Carolina.
Both are very interesting and give an inside view of what life was all about during the early history of our country.
