The Move to Florida
Our
time had come to an end , having lived in Sedona Arizona for almost 6
years , it was time to move on. Sedona is a nice place where people most
come during some sort of life transition and move on when it is time
to resume a so called normal life.
Liking the desert scenery and the cowboy mentality, I really wanted to stay in the southwestern part of the United States, my wife was OK with it, but she really wanted to move to Florida. We looked at several different locations including Phoenix, Las Vegas, and San Diego. it was while visiting Vegas my wife decided that wherever we moved , there had to be water and Lake Mead wasn’t going to cut it.
So, it was off to San Diego, having lived in southern California for several years, she was OK with that area. The first visit couldn’t have been better, the climate is perfect and the scenery is beautiful, everything was working perfectly and this seemed like the place to be.
The next order of business was to put our Sedona home up for sale, and wait. Even though I was looking forward to the move, something about it just didn’t seem right. However, as determined as we were , we pressed on with our plans.
Suddenly in early May, we received an offer on our house! It was a good offer, the only catch was they wanted to take possession the first of June, less than 3 weeks away. They seemed sincere so we began making plans to move, looking back I realize we were over anxious to make something happen.
Another trip to San Diego was in the offing and a garage sale to rid ourselves of the items we wouldn’t need in California. Not realizing it, the hammer was about to drop. The garage sale had gone well and we were planning on flying to San Diego the next morning. The real estate agent suddenly appeared at our front door about sundown with a drawn face, the sale had fallen through! Oh great, I had even quit my job.
There was really no turning back, so we decided to fly to California and try to figure a way out of this mess. This trip wasn’t as pleasant, it just seemed like this wasn’t the course to take for various reasons. We did put money down on an apartment in Carlsbad, but as soon as we got home , we decided against on moving to California, the 10% state income tax did have an influence on this.
My wife had been wanting to move to Florida for several years , so maybe that was the correct move, nothing else was working. Cautiously I began to do some Internet searches for Florida property. Much to my surprise, the property was a lot less expensive than I had imagined and much more affordable than California, I was ecstatic to learn that Florida had no income tax. What are we waiting for? Let’s go!
We immediately sold our house on a land contract to someone who had been to our ill fated garage sale, found an apartment in Sarasota Florida on the internet and began to make plans to move.
All that was left to do was drive an extra car to Florida, stop to see family on the way ,fly back to Sedona, load up the Ryder truck and head east. The die was cast.
