Australian Outback:The Pub

There isn't anything quite as unique anywhere in the world as the  Austalian pub. The most prevelent and colorful one are  in the outback , however they can be found any where in Australia that friends and neighbors meet to enjoy a brew and some good old conversation.

In the out back, where the population is sparce, the local or not so local pub is the only entertainment for miles around.  Driving for hours across unpopulated areas, and stopping for the evening in some small town of maybe 25 people, it is amazing how many people congregate in one of these pubs.

One of the most fascinating pubs in all of Australia is the one in Daly Waters in the Norhern Territory, a couple hundred miles south of Darwin. Located in a town of 18 hardy citizens, people come from miles around to enjoy the hospitality and refreshments available . It is hard to imagine towns this small, while in the Back o' Beyond I visited this pub with a group of tourists on a 25 passenger bus, when we drove into town we more than doubled the total population!

It was quite a surprise , we arrived about mid afternoon on the 4th of July  and they were beginning to celebrate the holiday. When asked why they were celebrating, one replied, "We are just grateful for what the United States did for us during the war." He went on to explain, "Besides that, we just like to party."

Another interesting pub can be found at Wallara's Ranch, located between Alice Springs and Uluru. We had spent the night before at Ayre's Rock, sleeping in a swag in below freezing temperatures. As a result, sleep was hard to come by, arriving at the ranch, I realized the only way I was going to get back in that swag is if I ingested a large amount of antifreeze. The folks in the pub were glad to oblige.

As is the case in most out back pubs, the center of attraction is the pool table. It is often stated that in the outback, the men are men and so are the women. It is a harsh environment and only the hardy can live there. They work hard and play hard, are very friendly and like to learn eveything they can from the outside world.

The women like to play pool as much as the men , the only catch is , if a woman loses at pool, she has to take off her underwear and hang it over the pool table. As you can see, some are winners and some are losers. Unfortunately,or fortunately, no one lost while we were there.

If you find yourself in the outback of Australia, be sure and seek out a few of the friendly pubs, it is well worth your time, you won't find friendlier people anywhere.
