Sedona Arizona Court House Butte
One
of the first and most impressive sights one sees when driving to Sedonathrough The Village of Oak Creek after exiting Interstate I-17 is
Courthouse Butte. Standing alongside Bell Rock, the giant red rock rock
structures create a formidable sight.
Courthouse Butte is a destination in itself. Due to it’s proximity to Bell Rock and it’s bell like symmetry, it was originally named Church Rock, however a mapmaker inadvertently named it Courthouse Butte and the name stuck.
However
it came by it’s name, it is an impressive monument. One can only
believe that Courthouse Butte is more of an appropriate title as it
certainly resembles a courthouse more than a church. Located in one of
the most beautiful areas in the world ,much time can be spent hiking all
the while enjoying the massive red rock cliffs.
There is much interest also in the more esoteric side of this edifice, Sedona is known world wide as a area of much extraterrestrial and paranormal activity. As Courthouse Butte is located next to Bell Rock, it’s proximity leads it to much activity as well. Legends state that Courthouse Butte is the perfect area to clear personal judgments and karma . Although Courthouse Rock isn’t one of the four major vortices's in the Sedona area, and not everyone visiting this special area feels the powers of the vortexes, there is no doubt it carries with it, it’s own special unique charm.
Whether or not there is anything to this aspect of Sedona, the area lends itself to many people experiencing enlightenment due if nothing else to the extreme overwhelming beauty of the area.
Unlike it’s neighbor, Bell Rock, climbing the Courthouse Butte would be next to impossible as the walls go straight up. The best avenue of exploration would be the several hiking trails in the area as they circumvent both Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock. When hiking these trails, a side benefit is the chance encounters with wildlife, many coyotes, rabbits, rattlesnakes and birds such as eagles and ravens can be encountered and observed.
The whole of the Verde Valley , Sedona area has much to offer the occasional visitor, spiritual seeker and the yearly resident. With the beautiful awe inspiring scenery, golf courses ,luxurious hotels and fine restaurants, there is much to offer even the most discriminating traveler. It is an area most people would never grow tired of visiting time and time again regardless of the reason or duration.
