Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Situated at the entrance to San Juan Harbor, El Morro has protected this city and country from invaders ranging from pirates and buccaneers in the early days, to the Spanish American war when it was bombed by the United States Navy.
Visible in front is the "water battery" one of the first defenses ever built. Cannon placed here could damage the hulls of enemy ships before they  entered the harbor.

Over time, different gun emplacements were add ranging from the cannon of earlier times to 4.7 inch Armstrong cannons from the World War 1 era and a 90 mm anti-aircraft gun of World War 2 vintage.
Much of the fort was rebuilt by American forces after being damaged during the Spanish American War in 1898.

Today it remains one of the top tourist attractions in Puerto Rico.
