Tropic of Capricorn

Tropic of Capricorn

Not far north of Alice Springs is this marker signifying the Tropic of Capricorn, or the spot that the tropics are entered in the southern hemisphere.

Entering this zone one doesn't get the feeling normally associated with the tropics, with temperatures hovering near 100 F and humidity a sweltering 3 % , and not a jungle within a thousand miles, one would never realize that he or she is in the tropics!
The Tropic of Capricorn lies 23 degrees 26′ 22″ south of the Equator, and marks the most southerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon. This event occurs at the December Solstice, when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun to its maximum extent. The next day the sun starts it's northern journey towards the Tropic of Cancer, arriving on the summer solstice.

Seems kind of boring to me, just going back and forth through eternity.
