Fort Sumter
Anyone traveling in the Charleston South Carolina area would enjoy a short trip by ferry to Fort Sumter.
It being built in 1829, is one of the oldest forts in the U.S., construction still wasn't finished in 1860 when the Civil War began. It is built in the shape of a pentagon being 170 to 190 feet long with five foot thick walls.
It was designed to house 650 men and 135 guns, although it was never filled to capacity, being undermanned because Democratic president James Buchanan reduced the size of the military.
The local elites observed the start of the Civil War from "The Battery" which is located on the waterfront in downtown Charleston, while sipping wine and eating pastries.
