Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve

Experience A Modern Day Walkabout!!

While visiting Belize several years ago, I stayed at the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve located in southern Belize.

The manager was very knowledgeable of the strides that Belize was making to modernize.

They want the technical knowledge from countries like the U.S., but they want to do it on their own and not have us interfering with the way they do things.

It was very primitive, with no running water or electricity. One evening we were going out in the jungle to look for Jaguars and Fer-De -Lance ,a highly poisonous viper snake that can grow up to 8 feet long.

The guide informed us that if we saw a Jaguar ,we should turn our flashlight on, as the light would scare the Jaguar away.

He then informed us that if we saw a Fer-de-Lance, we should turn our flashlight off,as they are attracted to the light.

My immediate question was , "What if we saw one of each?"

Funny, but they group suddenly decided that we were tired and just wanted to hang around the cabin all night and play cards!
